The work

“The Canyon of Taranto” is a composition that you can find at the Taranto swing bridge.

"The bridge is located in a very interesting place acoustically because the facades of the Borgo Antico and Borgo Nuovo buildings stand out at its ends. The surrounding sound continuously bounces between these two sides creating special resonances."

Inspiration

The inspiration

The bridge is located in a very interesting place acoustically because the facades of the Borgo Antico and Borgo Nuovo buildings stand out at its ends.

The surrounding sound continuously bounces between these two sides, creating peculiar resonances.

The waters of the channel below, which connects the Mar Grande to the Mar Piccolo, allow these sound signals to mingle with each other while continuing to bounce in the air and water, as if their duration could be extended over time.

It is not only the bridge that connects the old city to the new one, but the sound that floats through the air bouncing continuously between buildings and water. From the bridge it is easily heard, especially at night when traffic is almost absent.

Inside that sound I found short rhythmic patterns, noises coming from the harbor, verses and fragments of melodies sung by the birds flying over the area, shreds of voices and other indistinct sounds that I employed to write the rhythmic and melodic parts of this composition.

The sound of the city directly enters the music through the sonic debris of this special place.

The score includes a string section and electronics.

Location

The place

The Swing Bridge is one of the “jewels of Taranto” that, due to its majesty and vital function (connection between the Old Town and the New Town, and passage of the naval fleet), inspired an original musical composition.
